Will Smith practically adopted his canine co-star from his 2007 sci-fi thriller, I Am Legend.
The Unhealthy Boys: Journey or Die star was this week’s visitor on Sizzling Ones, the place host Sean Evans broached the lore of whether or not or not Smith tried to undertake Abbey, the German Shepherd who portrayed his sidekick, Sam.
“When we had Ludacris on the show, he talked about how he would buy a car off the lot of every Fast and Furious movie. Is it true that you tried to adopt Abbey the dog?” he requested.
Smith confirmed, claiming that “it was like Abbey spoke English.”
“You could say, ‘Hey Abbey, do you see where I left my phone?,’” he stated, quipping that she would bark in the suitable course. “Like she literally could understand you, it was the weirdest thing.”
He teased with a chuckle that Abbey “was the breadwinner of her family and she had to stay.”
“But it was really amazing to watch how, the scene where she bites, bites, bites where we have to do the scene where I choke her out and she lays out,” he recalled. “Abbey is doing that, he trained Abbey to go limp … like, ‘How do you train a dog to go limp?’”
Smith in the end likened the expertise to “working with a brilliant actress.”
In honor of Nationwide Pet Day on April 14, Smith shared a video montage to Instagram highlighting Abbey with the caption: “The goodness girl. #nationalpetday,” per DogTime.com.
