Some breaking information on the planet of twentieth century modernist literature: Virginia Woolf, the famed novelist and essayist, was additionally a poet. That is in accordance with new paperwork uncovered by Sophie Oliver, a lecturer of modernism on the College of Liverpool.

Oliver discovered them on the Harry Ransom Middle, an archive library on the College of Texas at Austin. She was there doing analysis on Gertrude Stein, one other literary determine. However she determined to beat the Texas warmth by poking across the Woolf recordsdata. Whereas she was wanting via a folder of letters Woolf wrote to her niece, Angelica, she discovered two folded items of paper. The fabric seemed totally different from the paper the letters had been on. And so they had pencil writing on them. “It’s obviously these two quickly drafted poems,” stated Oliver. “And I immediately think ‘well, that’s odd.’ Because Virginia Woolf isn’t a poet.”

After discovering them, Oliver scoured present Woolf analysis, and requested Woolf specialists, and could not discover another point out of those poems. Oliver says she thinks they had been missed by different researchers “because people are not necessarily looking in a folder of letters to her niece, all of which have been published — or the interesting ones, at least.”

Oliver estimates the date of the poems as someday after March 1927. And so they reveal a distinct shade of Woolf. One poem, titled “Hiccoughs” is devoted to her nephew, Quentin Stephen Claudian. It is a jokey, punny riff, enjoying with sounds and language. “Poor Quentin / went in / to a cough? Or should we call it a cup? / Hiccough? Hiccup?”

The opposite, titled “Angelica,” is a contact extra substantive.

The identify was lazy & beautiful
However the identify was not the entire of her,
There was the physique & the soul of her.
Angelica Angelica.
The Angel identify
However oh the disgrace
Drink she took to,
Dadie too,
Fellow Dadie,
Oh how shady
To sport with Dadie,
And the tangled yellow hair!

The Dadie referred to within the poem is a nickname for a pal of Woolf’s – the poet and Shakespeare scholar George Rylance. In response to Oliver, Dadie was round usually sufficient that Woolf may do this factor aunts usually like to do — razz their niece for having a crush. “These are signs of Woolf’s ebullience,” stated Oliver. “That she was kind of silly and liked to indulge in play and nonsense with these children as a way of connecting with them.”

Woolf did not have any kids of her personal. This was a “sore point” for her, stated Oliver. However these poems reveal one thing poignant in regards to the relationship she had with the household she did have.

As for Oliver, this detective work — discovering the letters, deciphering Woolf’s handwriting, estimating their date, determining who Dadie was — was a detour from her authentic work. However she’s not mad about it. “This kind of research is very addictive and it’s one of the joys of archival research,” she stated.
